Chapter 12
Weaver and Callaway had their heads together when Eve walked back in. They each gave a quick, guilty start, then shifted in their chairs.
âDonât get up.â Eve flicked a hand, then chose a seat at their end of the table. âA couple of questions. Was it Joseph Catteryâs habit to stay later at the bar, alone?â
âIâ¦Not that I know of,â Weaver began, glanced to Callaway.
âWe grabbed after-work drinks there now and then,â Callaway stated. âSometimes he stayed on, sometimes we left together. He was friendly with some of the regulars, so he might stay, hang with someone else.â
âYou left last, Mr. Callaway. Was he with anyone else, or talking to anyone else?â
âThe bartender. They always got into sports. But I didnât notice him âwithâ anyone, if thatâs what you mean. We blew off some steam. I left. I was beat. I think I told you yesterday, he wanted another drink, made some noises about going for food, but I just wanted to get home and crash. I wish Iâd taken him up on the dinner idea. We wouldnât be here now.â
âThere was nothing odd in his behavior when you left him?â
âNo.â He shook his head, picked up a glass of water but didnât drink. âIâve thought and thought about those last few minutes, trying to remember all the little details. It was just usual, just another day. It was all small talk and shop talk. He was tired, too, but he just wasnât ready to go home.â
She reached in her file bag, pulled out Macie Snyderâs photo.
âDid you see this woman at the bar?â
âI donâtâ¦â His brows knitted together. âIâm not sure. She looks familiar.â
âI saw her.â Weaver took the photo. âIâve seen her in the bar a few times. Iâm sure I saw her in there yesterday.â
âMust be why she looks familiar.â
Vann angled his head. âOh yeah. She was at a table with another woman and a couple of guys. Lots of laughing and flirting going on.â
âOkay. How about this woman?â
She offered the photo of Jeni Curve.
âJeni,â Nancy said immediately. âShe delivers for Café West. Sheâs up here nearly every day for someone. Was sheââ
âYes, Iâm sorry.â
âGod.â Breath hitching, Weaver squeezed her eyes shut. âDear God.â
âDo both of you know her as well?â Eve asked the men.
âEverybody knows Jeni,â Callaway said. âSheâs a sweetheart, always ready to take the extra step, always cheerful. Steve had the flirt on with her.â
âSheâs dead,â Vann murmured staring at the photo. âWe just got lunch from her a couple days ago. Locked in on the campaign, and she brought in our lunch order. Extra soy fries because she knows I like them. Sheâs dead.â
He rose, walked over, poured water. âSorry. It just hits. I got takeout from there one night last week, walked out just as she didâoff her shift. I walked her home before I caught a cab. I walked her home, and I thought about talking my way up to her place. I think sheâd have been open to it. But I had to work, so I let it go.
